On 30th August, 2018, a team from the Delfts University of Technology (TUDelft) in the Netherlands paid a courtesy call on the Principal of the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Prof. Joseph Y.T. Mugisha. The Head-Project Management Department at TUDelft, Ms. Marjan Kreijns led the visiting team. Marjan was accompanied by Ms. Frederieke Muijs, TWIGA Resident Coordinator in Uganda; Prof. John Kaddu; and Dr. Jackson Efitre from the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences of CoNAS. The TUDelft team is in Uganda on a working visit programme with partners in the country.
TUDelft is working in partnership with the Departments of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences (ZEFs) and Physics at CoNAS on EU H2020 funded project, ‘Transforming Weather Water data into value-added information services for sustainable Growth in Africa (TWIGA)’. CoNAS and TUDelft are implementing the project with other institutions in a 16 member consortium drawn from Africa and Europe (visit for more information: http://twiga-h2020.eu/).
TWIGA is intended to provide currently unavailable geo-information on weather, water and climate for sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing satellite based geo-data with innovative in-situ sensors and developing related information services that answer needs of African stakeholders and the GEOSS community.
As a benefit to Makerere and Uganda; TWIGA will provide evidence-based information on weather, water and climate to sectors including agriculture, environment and water which are vital for national growth. Makerere University will gain from opportunity for research, capacity building and North-South and South-South collaborations.
