Bioinformatics and Research Laboratory Opened

Prof. Alison Elliott, Director of the Makerere University/UVRI Centre of Excellence in Infection and Immunity commissioned the Bioinformatics Laboratory at the Department of Mathematics – College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University on 1st November 2018. The event was attended by staff of the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) led by Prof. Joseph Mugisha, Principal-CoNAS.

The Laboratory is equipped with hi-tech computers for research along with a new 60KVa generator to ensure full-time electricity supply to the Mathematics Building. The activity is a component of GBP4.5M Mak-UVRI Infection and Immunity Research Project funded by Wellcome Trust. The project also supported Dr. John Kitayimbwa's PhD studies and Post-doctoral research in Computational and Systems Biology. Dr. Kitayimbwa is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics.

In her remarks, Prof. Elliott expressed her pleasure on the achievement and commended the support from the development partners who made it possible. She noted, ‘right from my undergraduate studies, it has always been my dream to see basic sciences working together’. The work by the Mathematics graduate interns joining UVRI has been very encouraging, she said.
